Cut The Lock started with a simple observation: every time a storage unit goes to auction, somebody's life is in those boxes. And most of the time, nobody's looking out for it.
We started buying storage auction units in Central Texas — Austin, Round Rock, and the surrounding area. The first few units were an education. You open a lock, roll up a door, and you're looking at someone's apartment. Baby photos. Tax returns. A veteran's service medals. Handwritten letters. Things that have no price tag and no Craigslist listing.
Most auction buyers sort fast and sell faster. The personal stuff gets tossed because it has no resale value and slows you down. We couldn't do that. So we made a rule: before anything leaves the unit, every personal item gets cataloged.
That rule became Cut The Lock.
When we find photos, documents, heirlooms, or anything that clearly belongs to a specific person — we hold it and try to return it. Free. No conditions. If you lost something in a storage auction in Central Texas and we have it, we'll get it back to you.
We build a recovery database for every unit we open. Former tenants can file a claim, describe what they're looking for, and we check our records. If there's a match, we reach out. It doesn't always work — sometimes units change hands multiple times before we get them, sometimes the trail's too cold — but we try every time.
That part of the business doesn't make money. It's just the right thing to do.
After recovery review, everything else goes into our marketplace. Furniture, tools, electronics, collectibles, vintage finds — priced honestly, listed with real photos, shipped or available for local pickup in Austin.
This is how we keep the lights on. Every item sold supports the next unit we open — and the next set of personal items we try to return. The resale operation exists to fund the recovery operation.
We add new inventory as we open units. Sign up below and we'll email you when fresh drops hit.
Every unit gets cataloged before anything is sorted or sold. No exceptions.

Reuniting people with their belongings costs them nothing. That's not a promotion — that's the policy.
